Central & South America Trip

Overview

As of Jan 2013, Brig and I are on an extended trip round Central and South America. Here are our travels/plans:

We began with a week in Hawaii, staying in an apartment in Waikiki.

Next we flew down to Mexico for a 10 week tour of the country beginning with a bit of beach time on the Baja peninsula (taking in Cabo San Lucas and Todos Los Santos). From there we took a ferry across to the mainland and headed to El Fuerte and up the Copper Canyon to Creel. Returning to El Fuerte, we then headed down the west coast of the mainland stopping at Mazatlan on the way to Puerto Vallarta. We then headed East to Guadalajara and TequilaGuanajuato and San Miguel de Allende on the way to Mexico City. We then travelled South-East to Oaxaca and on to Puerto Escondito and San Cristobal de las Casas, before heading to the Eastern peninsula through PalenqueMeridaValladolid and on to Playa del Carmen. Finally we headed down to Tulum on our way out of Mexico and into Belize.

We spent a couple of weeks in Belize, visiting the island of Caye Caulker, and San Ignacio.

Then we entered Guatemala at Tikal (in the jungle) before making our way down to Antigua for a few days. Next we headed to San Pedro La Laguna on the banks of Lake Atitlan where we did 6 week Spanish course (living in with a local family for the first two weeks, then moving into our own apartment). We extended our stay here for another 5 weeks after that to recover from class and do some of our own work.

We then headed into El Salvador, stopping first at the surf town of El Tunco. We headed up the Ruta de las Flores to Juayua then on to Santa Ana where we climbed the volcano.

Deciding to skip Honduras, we shuttled straight to Leon in Nicaragua. After a side trip to explore the mangroves in Las Penitas, we moved on to Granada. Our last stop in Nicaragua was in San Juan del Sur, the home of amorous sea turtles.

Our first port of call in Costa Rica was the Pacific-facing Playa Carrillo. A couple of buses and an overnight stop in San Jose and we reached Cahuita, then Puerto Viejo, on the Caribbean coast.

We started our trip through Panama in Bocas del Torro before making our way to Boquete and on to Panama city. From there we took a very memorable 5-day sailing trip to Colombia via the San Blas islands.

Arriving in Cartagena in Colombia, we then flew to Medellin where we lived for a month. While there we visited Guatepe.

Then we flew to Quito, Ecuador from where we visited the market town of Otavalo and Baños (with its erupting volcano).

In Lima, Peru we met up with Brigid’s sister, Mary. Together we travelled down to Ica to go sandboarding and then to Ollantaytambo to visit Machu Picchu. We then spent some time in Cusco before taking the Inka Express to Puno.

Next, the three of us visited Copacabana in Bolivia, then headed to La Paz where Mary is leaving us. Brig and I will then make our way across to Sucre, where we have an apartment for 2 months.

We will probably then head into Chile and through Argentina from the wine region of Mendoza and across to Buenas Aires.

Them’s the plans so far…
